My Early-Morning Fuel

Updated: Sep 2, 2019

I drink this every morning, pre-workout, to give me a healthy boost of antioxidant-filled energy.

During your wellness journey you may read tips or advice about cutting coffee from your routine. Well, don't cut out the joe just yet. My favorite coffee recipe is made with healthy fats, superfoods, and antioxidants -- but without the jitters that can sometimes sneak up on you later.

Serving: 1 cup of coffee

1/4 tsp Cinnamon

1/4 tsp Turmeric

1/2 tsp Raw Cacao

1 TB Collagen Powder (Grass-fed or Marine)

1 TB Brain Octane Oil (MCT/Coconut Oil optional)

1 Tsp Monk Fruit or Coconut Sugar (optional)

Nut Milk option of choice (optional)

So what is all this in my coffee, you ask??

Raw Cacao is loaded with antioxidants - when you read about chocolate being healthy this is what they're talking about (not the Hershey bar, sorry).

Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and Cinnamon is a natural metabolism booster.

Collagen helps to restore your skin, nails, and hair, and is also good for joint health. I've used grass-fed (bovine) and marine (wild fish) collagen in this recipe. They are tasteless and odorless and dissolve well so it's really just a matter of personal preference.

Brain Octane Oil (BOO) is a specific type of MCT oil from Coconuts. BOO contains only Caprylic Acid, the most ketogenic part of the Coconut. This will turn your morning coffee into a body fat burner! It's also going to help sustain your energy and remove the brain fog. BOO costs a little more so you can also use MCT or Coconut Oil if you prefer.

Monk Fruit is a plant-based, no-sugar, no calorie sweetener. Coconut Sugar is unrefined and has a much lower glycemic level than other sugars. If you like a little sweet in your coffee, I recommend either of these options.

I typically blend all of the above ingredients with a cup of coffee and unsweetened almond milk with a hand-held frother to make sure it's fully blended. You could also use a small, personal blender to get it extra foamy. Or, you can always do it the old-fashioned way -- place all ingredients in your favorite coffee mug and pour your coffee over to help dissolve, and stir. Then add your milk of choice.

Extra Tip: I pre-mix enough of the dry ingredients (minus the sugar) in a container to last about a month. Then I put about 1 tsp of the superfood mixture in my coffee.

Extra Extra Tip: Coffee Bean crops have one of the highest concentrations of pesticides -- I strongly suggest using organic beans whenever possible. There are many affordable options out there these days so you don't have to break the bank to avoid toxins in your morning cuppa joe!
